The beloved Avon Fishing Pier in the Cape Hatteras National Seashore has closed after a powerful nor’easter caused a section of the structure to collapse into the Atlantic Ocean. Local photographer Jenni Koontz captured aerial footage of the damage on September 26, noting that the popular surfing and fishing spot suffered a relentless three-day battering from rough seas before giving way. Locals and visitors are hopeful the historic landmark will soon be repaired.
