Zuckerberg’s “Pervert Glasses” Just Hit a Wall — And Wall Street Notices

Mark Zuckerberg wanted cameras on every face. America is answering: no.

Bernstein luxury analyst Luca Solca just told clients the once-hot Ray-Ban Meta smart glasses business is losing steam because the public has a name for them now: pervert glasses. EssilorLuxottica moved more than 7 million pairs in 2025 after only 2 million in 2023 and 2024 combined. Then the social pressure arrived. Owners started leaving them at home. Influencers lost followers. Venues started banning them. Guerrilla posters went up in New York and London. Jimmy Kimmel and Lorde piled on. The court of public opinion did what regulators and Meta’s own LED “privacy light” never could.

That’s the story Wall Street is now pricing in. It’s also the story MAGA America has been waiting for: ordinary people refusing to live inside Zuckerberg’s next data farm.

The glasses look like normal Wayfarers. That’s the feature and the problem. A tiny camera sits in the frame. A blinking light is supposed to warn bystanders. Videos online show how to tape over it. Pickup-artist accounts used them to film women in stores and on sidewalks, then posted the clips. Schools started seeing kids record classmates. Content creators who bought the product now call them “fancy paperweights.” One told Engadget she wouldn’t wear them because she wouldn’t want anyone wearing them around her.

Meta’s response has been the usual Silicon Valley two-step: a software patch that kills the camera if the light is covered, another update, a patent for a hardware “kill switch,” and a billboard campaign that basically says “the light means we’re recording, trust us.” Instagram’s Adam Mosseri promised to take down harassment videos filmed on the glasses. Investigators found the same accounts and hundreds of similar clips still up. German group HateAid filed a criminal complaint. UK pubs, Comic-Cons, and some courts banned them. Activist group Everyone Hates Elon plastered parody ads calling them “the biggest advance in pervert technology since the trenchcoat” and slapped Jeffrey Epstein’s face on the frames. Crude. Effective. The nickname stuck.

Solca’s note is the part that should make Big Tech sweat. He argues the backlash is good for EssilorLuxottica’s traditional eyewear business. Slower smart-glass adoption means less cannibalization of regular frames and less chance glasses become another low-margin gadget category. Shares of the company have already halved from their late-2025 peak. He still rates them Market-Perform, but he asks the branding question that should keep Ray-Ban executives up at night: will Wayfarers be remembered the way Aviators are remembered for Tom Cruise — or as the “pervert glasses”?

X has been even blunter. Users call them stalkerware. Parents warn not to buy them for kids. Venues post “no smart glasses” signs. One popular take: Meta sold millions of cameras disguised as sunglasses and is now shocked people used them as cameras. Another: Zuck didn’t invent much lately except this. The product does exactly what it was designed to do — record the world hands-free while looking like ordinary eyewear. That’s why the LED was always more liability theater than real consent.

This is bigger than one product. Meta, Google, OpenAI and the rest of the AI crowd have bet the next decade on wearables. Glasses are the gateway. Put a camera and a microphone on someone’s face all day and you get training data, location, conversations, and faces — the raw material for the next generation of AI and advertising. Zuckerberg has said people without AI glasses will be at a disadvantage. That’s not a product pitch. That’s a threat. The same company that already built the largest private surveillance network in history now wants it sitting on your nose.

The left’s sudden concern for consent is rich. These are the same voices that cheered contact-tracing apps, vaccine passports, and “misinformation” speech codes. They trust the administrative state and Big Tech when it serves their politics. When a consumer gadget lets some lowlife film a woman at Target, they discover privacy. Fine. Use it. Protect your daughters. Ban the glasses from schools and locker rooms. Demand they look like recording devices, not fashion. Just don’t pretend this is only about “creeps.” The design is the creep. Hidden cameras in public spaces were never going to stay a novelty.

President Trump’s America First approach has always been clearer than Silicon Valley’s: technology should serve citizens, not harvest them. Elon Musk’s X is the free-speech counterweight to Meta’s content machine. Wearable AI can help the blind, first responders, and workers who need their hands free. It does not require turning every sidewalk into an unpaid film set for Instagram. Apple is already trying to distance its rumored glasses from Meta’s reputation. Good. Competition on privacy is the one thing that might actually work.

The market is doing what politics often can’t. Social stigma is not “hysteria.” It is people drawing a line. You do not have a right to record strangers in public without them knowing. You do not get to train your AI on their faces because you bought a pair of $300 sunglasses. Wall Street just admitted the backlash is real enough to threaten the whole wearables story. That’s not a tragedy. That’s the country saying no.

Zuckerberg can keep patching the LED. He can patent kill switches. He can put Kylie Jenner in the ads. The nickname is already out. Once the public decides a product is for perverts, no amount of marketing brings it back.
