President Donald J. Trump did what presidents are supposed to do. He put America first, signed the order, and let the other side have the tantrum.
On Thursday in the Oval Office, flanked by maps labeled “Making the Great Lakes Even Greater,” Trump signed an executive order directing the Interior Department and the Board on Geographic Names to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America. Federal maps, contracts, USGS documents, and official U.S. communications will use the new name. The U.S. Geological Survey already updated electronic records the same afternoon.
“We’re going to be changing the name of Lake Ontario effective immediately to Lake America,” Trump told reporters. “The lake change, the Lake of America, was something I’ve been thinking about for a long time, actually.” He added the line that instantly became a meme: America already has a gulf and now a lake. “Now all we need is an ocean.”
This is not a Sharpie gag like some on the Left try to make it out to be.. It is the same America First naming policy Trump launched on Day One of his second term with the Gulf of America. The executive order lays out the case Democrats and Ottawa refuse to answer. The United States is the greatest protector of the Great Lakes. The Coast Guard supplies 9 of 11 icebreakers that keep commercial shipping open. Washington has poured nearly $4 billion into the Great Lakes ecosystem over the last decade while Canada has spent far less. The deepest water and most of the lake’s volume sit in U.S. territory. The lake has been an American artery of trade, settlement, and defense since the colonial era and the War of 1812. It still feeds power plants, drinking water, steel, agriculture, and hundreds of thousands of American jobs.

The timing is not an accident. Trade talks with Canada collapsed. Trump imposed 50 percent tariffs on roughly $20 billion in Canadian goods. Ottawa is promising dollar-for-dollar retaliation starting September 8. Trump’s message has been consistent: Canada has been ripping the United States off on trade and riding American security for free. Renaming the lake is a reminder that the water, the shipping lanes, and the investment are not a Canadian entitlement.
Democrat New York Gov. Kathy Hochul immediately declared the Empire State will not comply.
“New York won’t be calling it that,” she posted on X, quoting the White House announcement. Her office later recycled a schoolyard acronym joke: the old Great Lakes mnemonic HOMES is now “SHAME.” She has spent the week accusing Trump of “treating our allies as enemies” and claiming “American families continue to suffer because of it.”

That is the Hochul playbook. New York is the only U.S. state on the lake. Its farmers sell apples north. Its ports sit on the St. Lawrence Seaway. Instead of lining up with the president who is finally using leverage against a trading partner that treats America badly, she sided with Mark Carney’s Ottawa and told New Yorkers the old name is sacred. State maps and highway signs can say whatever Albany wants. Federal maps will say Lake America. Patriots will say Lake America.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney posted a history lecture. The name, he said, comes from a Wendat word meaning the lake is beautiful and big, more than 400 years old, older than both Confederation and the Declaration of Independence. “Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario — then, now and always.” He also confirmed Canada will match the new U.S. tariffs.
Wisconsin Democrat Gov. Tony Evers filmed himself at a McDonald’s writing “Lake Wisconsin” on a napkin and signing it. “See, I can sign napkins that say things, too.” Vermont Republican Gov. Phil Scott, a longtime Trump critic, called the order “petty and disappointing” and demanded more negotiations. Michigan Rep. Debbie Dingell announced a “Hands Off Our Great Lakes Act” to try to nullify the order. New York Rep. Tim Kennedy said he is working on a bill. New York Rep. Joe Morelle called it a distraction. Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew compared Trump to a washed-up band replaying the Gulf of America hit. Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston said, “It’s Lake Ontario, buddy.” The Wendat Nation’s Grand Chief Pierre Picard condemned the change. Left-wing media and a handful of national Democrats piled on with the usual “pathetic,” “stunt,” and “embarrassment” talking points.
Notice the pattern. The same political class that spent years renaming schools, bases, holidays, and neighborhoods suddenly discovered that names are sacred — as long as the name is not America. They had no problem when Trump’s first-term and second-term opponents treated American history as a branding problem. They melt down when a president puts the American name on an American economic asset.
The order does not rewrite Canadian law or UN maps. Trump does not need it to. The United States government now calls the lake Lake America. USGS has already made it official in electronic documents. Interior Secretary Doug Burgum pledged to implement it. That is how federal geographic names work. Private companies, states, and foreign governments can sulk. Official U.S. paper will not.

X filled up the usual way. White House posts racked up tens of millions of views. MAGA users pointed out the hypocrisy: Democrats rename everything except the things that honor the country. Critics called it petty. Supporters called it overdue. The White House posted a USGS memo confirming the electronic change the same day and followed with a “TDS trigger warning” video. That is the correct posture. Do not apologize for putting America on the map.
Hochul can keep “Lake Ontario” on New York tourism brochures. Carney can keep the Wendat lecture. Evers can keep the napkin. Dingell can file her one-page bill that will go nowhere in a Republican House. None of that changes the facts in the executive order. America does the icebreaking. America writes the big checks to protect the lakes. America’s deepest water and most of the volume sit on this side of the line. America’s workers, ports, and power plants depend on it.
President Trump renamed the gulf. Now he renamed the lake. The people who spent a decade lecturing Americans about whose land and whose history this is suddenly cannot stand seeing the word America on a body of water the United States actually uses, defends, and pays to keep open.
Call it what the federal government now calls it.
Lake America.
