Young American men aren’t “soft.” A culture that treats their instincts as a problem, then wonders why they check out, is

Nick Freitas, the Green Beret veteran and new Blaze Media voice, put it plainly on Rufo & Lomez: today’s 19-year-olds have no Normandy to storm, and the traits that would have gotten a man across that beach—drive, protectiveness, risk, physicality, leadership—are now labeled toxic, evil, or something to repress. That is not the same hardship earlier generations faced. It is a targeted cultural inversion. See the video below…

The numbers are not subtle. Women now make up roughly 55–58% of undergraduates; men are a shrinking minority on campus and in many professional pipelines. First-marriage rates have fallen for decades; the gap between unmarried and married men ages 20–39 has exploded. A large share of young men report loneliness, isolation, or feeling like failures. Porn, gaming, and gambling fill hours that used to go to work, courtship, or building something. Suicide remains far higher for males. Institute for Family Studies surveys of 18–29-year-old men show high aspirations colliding with stalled incomes, shaky dating markets, and a sense that the old adult milestones—marriage, kids, competence—have been pushed to the bottom of the list.

Freitas’s core claim is that this is not laziness or “lack of resilience.” It is what happens when institutions and media spend years telling boys they are the problem while offering cheap dopamine instead of purpose. He is right on the diagnosis. A society that pathologizes normal male energy, delays family formation until the 30s, and treats competence as suspect will produce exactly the withdrawal we see: some men numb out on screens, some chase the hedonistic “manosphere” version of strength, and a growing number simply stop participating.

On X the conversation is raw and consistent. Men describe a dating market skewed by apps and hypergamy, workplaces where male directness is a lawsuit risk, schools that treat boys as defective girls, and a culture that lectures them to “level up” while insisting nothing is wrong with the other side of the equation. Some posts are bitter. Many are simply observational: if the rewards for delayed gratification, hard work, and traditional roles have been stripped away or mocked, rational young men recalibrate. That does not make them villains. It makes them diagnostic.

Freitas’s prescribed response is better than most of the alternatives on offer. Identity rooted in Christ is not a slogan; it is an un-stealable source of meaning when institutions lie and culture shifts. Eternal purpose does not depend on the next election or the latest HR memo. Pair that with actual competence—trade skills, physical fitness, delayed gratification, the willingness to lead a family—and you get men who can build rather than merely consume or resent. The 20-year strategy he sketches—faith, marriage, children, transmitting values instead of waiting for the culture to repent—is the only one that scales. Demography and family formation still matter more than any single election cycle.

The manosphere is only a half-answer, as Freitas has said elsewhere. Revenge, status-maxing, and treating women as the enemy produces the same emptiness as the porn-and-games loop, just with better lighting. Biblical masculinity—strength in service of something higher than the self—is the older, more durable model. Young men were not designed to be passive consumers or perpetual adolescents. They were designed to build, protect, and provide. A culture that tells them those instincts are the problem should not be surprised when they stop volunteering for the project.

Boomers and Gen X often miss how different this environment is. “We had it harder” is true in some material ways and false in the cultural ones that matter for identity. There is no draft, no shared national mission, and plenty of voices insisting the civilization previous generations built is the source of the world’s evils. You cannot ask young men to fight for a story that frames them as the villain and then act shocked when they sit the fight out.

The fix is not more government programs or “redefining masculinity” into something unrecognizable. It is fathers who stay, churches that stop apologizing for men, schools that stop treating boys as a problem to be managed, and young men themselves who refuse the cheap substitutes. Seek what is excellent. Build a life that can carry a wife and children. Ignore the people who profit from your demoralization.

America still needs its young men. The question is whether it will stop lying to them long enough for them to show up.
