Hunter Biden just delivered the clearest update yet on his father’s condition, and it’s not the optimistic spin the family has been pushing.
In a BBC Newsnight interview that aired Friday, Hunter said the former president’s aggressive prostate cancer “has spread, metastasized into his bones and further.” He called it “very painful” and “very debilitating in many respects.” Watching it, he said, is “really sad.” He even wished his father would complain more “because it’s not good.”
Joe Biden, 83, was diagnosed in May 2025 — just four months after leaving the White House — with an aggressive form of prostate cancer carrying a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5). It had already spread to the bone. The official line at the time was that it appeared hormone-sensitive and could be “effectively managed.” He completed a course of radiation and hormone therapy by the fall of 2025. Jill Biden has since said he will live with the cancer for the rest of his life and that he has slowed down.
Now his own son is describing a man in significant pain whose disease has progressed beyond the bones.
This is the same Joe Biden whose physical and cognitive decline was the worst-kept secret in Washington for years. The same man the White House, Democratic operatives, and a compliant press corps insisted was sharp as a tack while he shuffled through scripted appearances, froze on camera, and needed handlers to guide him off stages. Special Counsel Robert Hur’s report already described an elderly man with significant memory problems. The June 2024 debate against Donald Trump made the decline impossible to ignore. Hunter himself admitted in the same BBC interview that he watched that debate from California and was “shocked,” saying “I knew something was wrong.”
The cancer diagnosis arrived only after Biden was safely out of office. Convenient timing. For years the public was told any questions about his fitness were conspiracy theories or ageism. Now the family is acknowledging advanced metastatic disease that is painful and debilitating — while still trying to keep the old man “out there” making occasional public appearances and preparing a memoir.
Call him what he was: the last puppet president. For four years the decisions, the talking points, the personnel, and the priorities tracked the preferences of Barack Obama’s network and the permanent administrative state far more closely than any independent judgment from the man in the Oval Office. When the cognitive lights dimmed and the physical decline became obvious, the machine kept the figurehead in place as long as it was useful. The moment he became a liability, he was pushed aside. The cancer news is simply the latest chapter in a long pattern of controlled narrative and delayed disclosure.
Hunter’s comments strip away more of the remaining varnish. The disease is advancing. The pain is real. The debilitation is real. And the people who spent years denying the obvious about Joe Biden’s condition still expect the public to treat the latest official statements with trust they long ago forfeited.
America deserved better than a managed decline sold as steady leadership. The truth keeps leaking out anyway.
