New York City’s Democratic Socialist Mayor Zohran Mamdani is rolling out taxpayer-funded “city-owned” grocery stores that will sell milk, eggs, produce, and meat at a 30 percent discount. The first one is aimed for the Bronx by 2027, with one in each borough. Projected savings: about $90 a month for lucky shoppers. Sounds generous — until you ask who gets to walk through the door.

City officials have already admitted they need a way to keep non-New Yorkers (hello, New Jersey) from cleaning out the shelves of subsidized food. Their solution? A “library card-esque” membership system. In plain English: show some form of ID or residency proof if you want the government-discounted arugula. No card, no cheap groceries. Taxpayers are footing the bill for the stores and the discounts, so only “everyday New Yorkers” get access.
This is the same Zohran Mamdani who belongs to the Democratic Socialists of America. The same DSA that declares voter ID laws “racist” and attacks the SAVE Act as a “secret poll tax.” Their own words: candidates must “stand firm against racist voter ID laws.” Ask for photo ID to protect the integrity of elections that decide who runs the country, and you’re a bigot. Ask for ID so New Jersey residents don’t empty taxpayer-subsidized shelves of discounted eggs, and it’s suddenly just good management.

This is not complicated. Democrats and their socialist allies have spent years insisting that requiring identification to vote is Jim Crow reincarnated. They claim millions of people somehow cannot obtain ID even though they need it for banking, flying, buying alcohol, renting a car, or — as we previously saw under Mamdani — signing up to shovel snow for the city. Yet the moment the government is handing out free or heavily discounted goods, the same crowd has zero problem creating a gatekeeping system that tracks who is shopping and keeps outsiders out.
The principle is not about access or fairness. It is about power and convenience. Voter ID threatens the ability to inflate rolls, import non-citizen voting, and paper over weak election security. Grocery ID protects the political brand of “affordability” from being embarrassed by empty shelves and New Jersey freeloaders. One is sacred; the other is just logistics.

Mamdani’s team frames the grocery card as practical. Fine. Then apply the same practicality to the ballot box. If a free membership card is good enough to prove you’re a New Yorker entitled to taxpayer-subsidized food, a photo ID is more than good enough to prove you’re a citizen entitled to decide who spends those taxes. The selective outrage is the tell. These people do not actually believe ID is racist. They believe it is inconvenient when it limits their preferred electorate.
Americans already show ID for far less consequential transactions every day. The only place the left treats it as an existential threat is the one place it threatens their hold on power. Mamdani’s grocery plan just made that double standard impossible to ignore. When the government is giving away discounted groceries, papers please. When the government is counting votes that decide the future of the country, papers are “racist.”
That is not principle as all Whatfinger readers know. That is hypocrisy with a library card attached brought to you by the same defeated ideology designed to destroy freedom and all business so they can increase their own power over us all.
