Swedish health officials announced on Thursday the identification of the first case of a person infected with the more contagious variant of mpox, which was initially detected in eastern Congo. This news comes just a day after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreaks in Congo and other parts of Africa as a global emergency.

According to a statement from the Swedish public health agency, the patient sought medical attention in Stockholm after returning from a region in Africa experiencing a significant outbreak of this highly infectious mpox variant.
“The individual contracted the infection while staying in an area of Africa where a major outbreak of the more infectious form of mpox is ongoing,” the agency noted.
Magnus Gisslen, a state epidemiologist with the Swedish health agency, confirmed that the patient has received treatment and been provided with specific guidelines to follow.

“The presence of a patient with mpox in Sweden does not increase the risk to the general population,” Swedish officials assured, emphasizing that experts believe the risk remains “very low.” However, they cautioned that occasional imported cases might continue to surface.
Earlier this year, scientists identified a new and deadlier strain of mpox in a Congolese mining town, which raised concerns due to its potential for easier spread. This variant of mpox, which can have a mortality rate of up to 10%, primarily spreads through close contact with infected individuals, including sexual contact.
The WHO reported that there have been over 14,000 cases and 524 deaths across more than a dozen African countries this year, already surpassing last year’s numbers. A staggering 96% of these cases and fatalities have occurred in a single country—Congo.
