Eric Adams: “We’re facing a humanitarian crisis that requires us to step up. New Yorkers have always been there to help those in need, but the strain on our resources, including housing migrants in hotels, is pushing us to our limits.” (Eric Adams, addressing the challenges NYC faces in accommodating the influx of migrants)
Marriott International has taken legal action against one of its franchisees, accusing them of breaching their contract by transforming a New York City property into a migrant shelter. In a lawsuit filed in federal court, Marriott alleges that Pride Hotel LLC, the franchisee, went rogue by entering into a profitable deal with the City of New York to house migrants and asylum seekers, instead of operating the hotel in Queens as a dual-branded Aloft and Element property as originally agreed.

Aloft and Element are just two of Marriott’s extensive portfolio of over 30 brands. According to Marriott, Pride Hotel not only failed to notify them of this significant shift in operations but also neglected to remove Marriott’s trademarks and branding before turning the hotel into a shelter. This oversight, Marriott argues, has caused considerable damage to its brand, prompting the company to seek more than $2.6 million in damages.
Kathy Hochul: “We are doing everything in our power to provide shelter and support to those seeking asylum. This includes the use of hotels as temporary housing, but we need federal assistance to ensure we can sustain these efforts.” (Kathy Hochul, speaking on the need for federal support during the migrant crisis, ) –
Amazing how these Leftist politicians never just say to close the damn border. It is always housing and feeding and giving migrants our tax dollars. Just like how they destroyed Europe. They are following the same game plan and we are just 5 years behind them at this pace. – Mal
This lawsuit draws attention to a larger trend in New York City, where hotels repurposed as migrant shelters have tapped into a deep reservoir of taxpayer funds. A recent report revealed that the city is forking out an average of $156 per room per night for these accommodations, with some rooms costing upwards of $300 per night. In total, New York City has shelled out approximately $4.88 billion on the migrant crisis over recent years, with nearly $2 billion of that sum earmarked for housing alone.

What’s particularly striking is that a significant portion of this housing expenditure isn’t even going toward traditional shelters—internal documents suggest that about 80% of the facilities being used by the city are actually motels or inns. This revelation underscores the staggering costs and logistical challenges of addressing the migrant influx, while also highlighting the potential for legal disputes when business agreements go awry.
