The Hellenistic Blueprint: Architecting the Early Gospel Path–How the Greeks Paved the Way for Christ.
Have you ever wondered how the early church was able to spread its message so rapidly across the ancient world? Join John Barnett as we explore how the conquests of Alexander the Great and the resulting Greco-Roman culture perfectly set the stage for the New Testament.
In this session, we will look at the stunning architecture and centralized city planning that made the ancient world a ready-made communication network for the Gospel. Here is what we will cover:
1. The Master Plan of the Marketplace
Scripture References: General Gospel accounts of Jesus healing in the marketplaces.
Summary of Coverage: When you read in the Gospels that people laid the sick in the marketplaces, you might picture a dusty, rural flea market or farmer’s market. The reality was vastly different! We will explore how Alexander the Great masterminded cities with intersecting North-South (Cardo) and East-West roads. At the center of these crossroads was the agora or forum—a massive, centralized hub of giant columns and stone where everyone gathered to share news. This brilliant Greek city planning created the perfect communication network for the early church.
2. Preaching in the Shadow of Pagan Giants
Scripture References: General accounts of Paul’s missionary journeys and imprisonments.
Summary of Coverage: While Hellenization made travel and communication easier, it also made sharing the Gospel incredibly dangerous. At the center of these Greek crossroads stood massive temples to pagan gods, with columns soaring over 30 feet high. The ancient world did not have pluralism; an entire town would fiercely follow a single god. We will learn how much courage it took for Paul to stand in a marketplace, point to Christ in the shadow of those looming pagan temples, and face severe beatings and imprisonment for declaring the truth.
3. Beth Shean: From King Saul to Christian Martyrs
Scripture References: Matthew 4:25 (The Decapolis); Historical context of 1 Samuel (King Saul’s death).
Summary of Coverage: We will visit Beth Shean, an impressive city of the Decapolis just a day’s walk from Capernaum. A thousand years before Christ, the Philistines hung King Saul’s body on the walls of this city. By the time Jesus saw it, the Roman section boasted incredible engineering, including indoor plumbing, storm sewers, and a grand Cardo. Tragically, we will also look at the city’s amphitheater, which later became the site where hundreds of early Christians were martyred by the Romans following the destruction of Jerusalem.
