Electric vehicle (EV) owners driving General Motors’ lineup of cars have something to look forward to. From September 18, they can purchase the much-anticipated GM charging adapter that allows them to tap into Tesla’s vast Supercharger network. For a price of $225, the adapter opens the door to thousands of Tesla fast chargers, making long journey easier with quick top-ups.

The adapter will be available in GM’s vehicle brand mobile apps. Once you have got your hands on it, the process is pretty seamless. Using the same app, you will be able to locate Tesla Superchargers, start charging, and also handle billing. Additionally, the app will let you check the status of charging stations, so you would not waste time driving to a charger only to find it fully occupied.
This shift represents a larger trend in the EV world. Major automakers like GM, Ford, and Rivian are transitioning from the Combined Charging System (CCS) standard to the North American Charging Standard (NACS) — the system Tesla pioneered. The goal? To make use of Tesla’s expansive Supercharger network, which is widely recognized for its speed and accessibility. While new GM models with native NACS ports are expected to be in the market by 2025, this adapter is a bridge for current EV owners still equipped with CCS ports.

By taking this step, GM EV drivers now have access to a staggering 17,800 Tesla Supercharger stations across North America. For comparison, Ford and Rivian also offer NACS adapters to their customers, though they have taken slightly different approaches. Rivian and Ford, for example, have provided adapters at no extra cost for those who acted quickly. However, from September 30, Ford customers have to face a $230 fee if they have not already asked for their adapter.
As for the technical side, GM hasn’t limited production to just one supplier. The company is working with several partners to ensure the adapter is compatible with all its EV models, regardless of where the part comes from. This approach underscores the flexibility and broad compatibility of the NACS adapter across GM’s electric lineup.

For the customers of America, the adapter is already available for order. Canadian GM owners will have to wait until later in 2024 to get theirs.
