Elon Musk recently provided insights into how the algorithm for X (formerly Twitter) functions. According to Musk, the X algorithm is designed to prioritize content that users engage with, such as posts they like, comment on, or share. One of the strongest signals that influence the algorithm is when users forward posts to their friends. The algorithm assumes that forwarding requires effort and, therefore, that the content is particularly valued by the user. However, Musk acknowledged a limitation in the algorithm’s design, noting that it is not currently sophisticated enough to distinguish between content forwarded out of interest and content shared out of outrage or disagreement Outlook India
Elon Musk, the owner of the social media platform X, recently explained how its algorithm works and what influences the type of content users see in their feeds. According to Musk, the algorithm is primarily driven by user interaction. “If you interact with content, you want to see more of that content,” Musk noted. This means that the posts you like, comment on, or share will lead the algorithm to show you more similar content.
One of the strongest signals to the algorithm, Musk revealed, is sharing content with friends. He stated, “If you forward X posts to friends, it assumes you like that content a lot because it takes effort to forward.” This action is interpreted by the algorithm as a strong indication of a user’s interest, leading to more of that type of content appearing in their feed.
Elon Musk said forwarding content to other X users signals an interest in that subject to its algorithm, regardless of intent.

However, Musk also acknowledged a significant limitation of this system. The algorithm does not distinguish between positive and negative motivations for sharing content. “Unfortunately, if the actual reason you forwarded the content to friends was because you were outraged by it, we are currently not smart enough to realise that,” Musk admitted. This means that even if users share content out of disagreement or anger, the algorithm might still interpret it as a preference, leading to more of the same.
Musk further emphasized his support for “freedom of speech” on the platform, stating, “I like content that supports freedom of speech. Long live X. Long live freedom of speech.”
In a provocative turn, Musk also took aim at Brazil’s Chief Justice Alexandre de Moraes, writing, “I’ll cage fight the dictator in Brazil if I have to.” This remark stems from a supposed dispute that began in April when Musk decided to unsuspend accounts linked to the 2023 Brazilian Congress attack, defying a court order to keep them blocked.
In retaliation, Alexandre de Moraes initiated an investigation into Musk, accusing him of spreading misinformation, obstructing justice, and inciting criminal behavior. He also instructed Brazilian internet service providers to block access to X, imposed daily fines on users attempting to bypass the ban via VPNs, and froze the finances of Musk’s company, Starlink, in Brazil. Musk has since accused de Moraes of attacking democracy and has used X to voice his criticism of the judge’s actions.
Key Points:
i. User Engagement Drives Content: X’s algorithm primarily shows more content that users engage with, such as posts they like, comment on, or share.
ii. Sharing Content Is Key: Sharing posts is one of the strongest signals to the algorithm, indicating a high level of interest and leading to more similar content in the feed.
iii. Algorithm’s Limitations: The algorithm cannot currently distinguish between positive and negative reasons for sharing content, potentially misunderstanding user intent.
iv. Support for Free Speech: Elon Musk reaffirmed his commitment to freedom of speech on X, advocating for a broad range of viewpoints.
v. Conflict with Brazilian Judiciary: Musk has been involved in a public feud with Brazil’s Chief Justice Alexandre de Moraes, accusing him of undermining democracy after Musk defied a court order related to content moderation on X.
