A human smuggler led Texas DPS troopers on a high-speed pursuit before the driver and a passenger fled the vehicle and attempted to swim across the Rio Grande into Mexico. The passenger, Brenda Castro of Laredo, entered the river with her infant to evade arrest, but was eventually taken into custody. Troopers found five undocumented immigrants in the vehicle and referred them to US Border Patrol, while the driver escaped into Mexico. Castro was charged with felony human smuggling and endangering a child.
