At the White House Christmas reception, President Trump opened with a somber tribute to victims of recent violence, calling attacks at Brown University, in Australia, and in Syria “rough” days and offering his “deepest regards and respects” to affected families. He praised a “very brave person” involved in the Australia attack. Trump then shifted to the holiday celebration, saying the nation can “celebrate Christmas” and “say loudly” that it celebrates Hanukkah after what he called a “purely anti-Semitic attack.”
