Breakout country music star Megan Moroney recently addressed long-standing rumors about her relationship with fellow country singer Morgan Wallen. During an appearance on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast on July 31, Moroney, 26, openly discussed her connection with Wallen, clarifying that they never had a formal relationship.
“I have so tried to avoid [this] in every single interview I’ve ever done,” Moroney admitted to host Alex Cooper. “We’re here now, and time has passed, and all is well.” She emphasized that while she and Wallen, 31, were close, their relationship was never exclusive. Moroney explained that they met in 2020 before the COVID-19 pandemic and had maintained a friendship since then. “We were friends for a long time. We were not just friends. And now we’re friends,” she shared, indicating that their connection was more than platonic but never reached the level of a public relationship.

Moroney also addressed the speculation surrounding her 2023 single “Tennessee Orange,” which many believed was about Wallen. Despite the rumors, she remained tight-lipped about the song’s inspiration. “I will not say who my songs are about, ever,” she stated firmly on the podcast. “Will never name.”
While Moroney confirmed she is currently single, she also shared details about her past romantic experiences. She recounted moving to Nashville after college, during the COVID-19 pandemic, and briefly dating a man who she later discovered had a girlfriend. “I dated a guy in Nashville. Well, actually we weren’t officially dating,” she clarified. “He had a whole girlfriend the whole time. I was with him every single day. He had a girlfriend. He wasn’t just cheating. … I could not believe it. He was, like, low-key insane though.”
Moroney revealed that her song “Sleep on My Side” was inspired by this particular relationship. She also recounted the moment she confronted the man after discovering his deceit, stating, “I was like, ‘Literally never speak to me again. I know we’re not together, but we’re breaking up.’” To add to the awkwardness, this ex-boyfriend had met Moroney’s entire family at a wedding they attended together, unaware of his ongoing relationship with another woman.

Reflecting on her experiences, Moroney noted that her tumultuous love life has been a significant source of inspiration for her music. She mentioned a recent situation, humorously referring to it as a “fresh out the slammer situation,” borrowing a phrase from Taylor Swift’s song “The Tortured Poets Department.” Moroney hinted that these personal trials often lead to new music, stating, “There was a situation not that long ago where I did something. I texted my manager and I said, ‘We’re going to get a good song out of this. Also make me a therapy appointment for tomorrow.’”
