The number of most serious water pollution incidents rose by 60% last year, according to data covering England.
An amber weather warning covered a large section of the South-East of England. Data shows water companies quickly started discharging from sewage overflows, particularly Thames Water and Southern Water.
One campaigner said: ‘The Thames should not be in the state it is now, there is no excuse for it’
