The real target is the Chinese economy, trade expert says, as 50% metals tariffs take effect

FRANCE 24’s Mark Owen speaks to Gavin Bade, trade and economic policy reporter at the Wall Street Journal, about the 50% tariffs on aluminium and steel imports to the United States coming into effect on Wednesday. He says that ‘the real target is the Chinese economy’ and that the Trump administration is applying blanket tariffs to avoid so-called transhipments that would allow China to circumvent US levies.
