- North Korean hackers linked to Lazarus Group’s TraderTraitor pulled off the largest crypto heist ever, draining ~$6.3B from Binance hot wallets across 10+ blockchains including Ethereum, Bitcoin, Tron, and XRP in just 20 minutes via a compromised engineer’s laptop and signed authorizations. Blockchain firms like TRM Labs, Elliptic, and Chainalysis traced the attack with high confidence, marking it as roughly four times larger than the prior record Bybit hack; Binance paused withdrawals but pledged full coverage via SAFU and reserves while ~$3B in assets were frozen by partners like Tether and Circle.
- This unprecedented breach exposes persistent centralized exchange vulnerabilities despite industry maturation, eroding user trust and triggering immediate market fallout with over $1.5B in leveraged liquidations and sharp drops in BTC and SOL prices. While Binance claims user funds remain safe overall, the incident underscores how even top platforms rely on hot wallets and insider access points that state actors can exploit, potentially accelerating shifts toward self-custody, DeFi alternatives, and stricter internal controls across the sector.
- For crypto security broadly, the hack highlights the need for hardened defenses against nation-state threats, including better laptop/insider monitoring, advanced multi-signature schemes, and faster cross-chain freezing protocols, while raising geopolitical stakes as North Korea funds its regime through digital theft. It serves as a wake-up call that no exchange is immune, pushing the industry toward more transparent security audits and possibly heavier regulatory oversight to prevent future billion-dollar drains that could undermine mainstream adoption.
🇰🇵 North Korean hackers just pulled off the largest cryptocurrency theft in history, stealing roughly $6.36 billion from Binance in just 20 minutes.
Blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs has linked the attack with high confidence to TraderTraitor, a North Korean state-sponsored hacking group associated with the notorious Lazarus Group.
The attackers reportedly drained Binance wallets across 10 blockchains, stealing approximately $3.79 billion from Ethereum, $1.47 billion in Bitcoin, $628 million from Tron and $296 million from the XRP Ledger.
The scale of the operation is staggering, with the amount stolen roughly four times greater than the $1.5 billion Bybit hack in February 2025, which was also attributed to North Korean hackers.
Binance’s preliminary investigation suggests the attackers compromised an engineer’s laptop, gaining access to systems used to authorize withdrawals rather than directly stealing wallet private keys.
On Ethereum, investigators found that attackers used 50 signed authorizations to gain control of a Binance wallet, allowing them to drain funds and intercept subsequent deposits.
More remarkably, that access reportedly remained active for nearly four hours, including more than 90 minutes after Binance suspended withdrawals.
The exchange has pledged to cover losses using its emergency SAFU fund and company reserves.
Meanwhile, cryptocurrency companies have reportedly helped freeze approximately $3 billion of the stolen assets, although billions remain outside their control.
