Army Lt. Gen. Brett Sylvia is gone. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth removed him from the Joint Staff’s top strategy, plans, and policy post — the J5 — after Sylvia failed three polygraph tests about leaking classified information on the Iran war and the Russia-Ukraine war to reporters.
A senior Pentagon official told CBS, Fox, Daily Wire, and others that the leaks had grown critical enough for Hegseth to act immediately “to protect national security.” The case has been referred to the Department of Justice. Sylvia is also accused of meeting journalists outside the building to dodge the escort rules Hegseth put in place.

Sylvia is a West Point ’94 graduate, former commander of the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell, and a 32-year combat veteran with multiple deployments, a Purple Heart, and six Bronze Stars. He took the J5 job in late 2025 after being nominated for the third star under Biden. He is the second general pushed out of that exact post under Hegseth. His predecessor, Lt. Gen. Joseph McGee, was forced to retire last October.
The family detail is the one that sticks. Sylvia’s son, Gavin Sylvia, worked as a “he/him” data analyst at FEMA. After Charlie Kirk was assassinated in September 2025, Gavin posted on Instagram: “Half mast for the literal racist homophobe misogynist?? bffr.” Laura Loomer published the post, the pronouns, and the family connection. DHS placed Gavin on administrative leave. Loomer also publicly told Hegseth to review the father’s employment at the Pentagon. A year later, the father is out.
Three failed polygraphs. Thirty-two years of service. At least 26 generals and admirals already removed under Hegseth. Second J5 director in a year.
Hegseth has made rooting out leakers a priority. Senior officers have faced polygraphs. The Pentagon’s new media rules require escorts inside the building; Sylvia is accused of working around them. Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell confirmed an Air Force OSI investigation and “necessary personnel action” to protect sensitive information, without naming Sylvia in the statement. The Joint Staff first thanked Sylvia for 32 years of service, then walked the statement back.
The timing is not accidental. President Trump is weighing renewed strikes on Iran after the November midterms. The J5 helps coordinate those options with the chairman and the White House. Hegseth has already ordered a 20 percent cut in the top officer ranks by early 2027 and has removed roughly two dozen generals and admirals. Critics call it a purge. The practical effect is fewer officers in sensitive posts who treat classified planning as material for reporters.
For MAGA and the country this is straightforward. A three-star in the planning cell for active wars fails three polygraphs on leaks. His son, a federal employee, publicly mocked the half-staff order for a murdered conservative. The prior administration promoted and protected people with that posture. Hegseth is not. The investigation is ongoing and the DOJ has the file. More will come out.
