Stanford just created a HUMAN-MOUSE CHIMERA whose cerebral cortex is 92% HUMAN BRAIN TISSUE.
This is getting OUT OF CONTROL…
Mad scientists are now growing living human brain tissue inside animals until it occupies nearly their ENTIRE CEREBRAL CORTEX.
They genetically engineered mice to develop without most of their cerebral cortex, then filled the missing region with HUMAN BRAIN ORGANOIDS.
The human brain tissue expanded nearly FIVEFOLD, eventually accounting for 92% of the animals’ cortical tissue.
The human neurons developed electrical activity, integrated into the mouse’s nervous system, and extended nerve fibers all the way into its SPINAL CORD.
Electrical activity in the HUMAN BRAIN TISSUE was associated with the mice’s facial movements.
The chimeric mice also demonstrated WORKING MEMORY, performing above chance on a memory test that mice lacking most of their cerebral cortex failed.
This is straight out of a dystopian nightmare.

- Stanford scientists created a human-mouse chimera by transplanting human brain organoids into genetically altered mice lacking most of their cerebral cortex, resulting in the human tissue expanding nearly fivefold to comprise 92% of the mouse’s cortical volume, forming functional connections to the nervous system and spinal cord while linking electrical activity to the animal’s movements and improving working memory performance.
- Similar experiments have included 2020 human-mouse embryo chimeras with up to 4% human cells, efforts to grow human organs in pigs and monkeys via stem cell complementation, and glial cell transplants that humanized large portions of mouse brain white matter, sparking accusations of “mad science” and dystopian hybrids reminiscent of The Island of Dr. Moreau amid fears of blurred species boundaries and unintended cognitive enhancements.
- Proponents frame these as essential for modeling human neurodevelopmental disorders like autism and epilepsy in living systems where organoids alone fall short, yet critics highlight profound ethical risks around animal suffering, moral status of chimeras, and the hubris of engineering human-like traits in animals without adequate safeguards.
