Federal agents from Homeland Security Investigations raided Rep. Ilhan Omar’s home in the Washington, DC area before dawn on October 12, 2026. They carried a search warrant signed by a judge. Agents took her phone, laptop, passport, and boxes of documents as part of an ongoing criminal investigation.
The probe centers on immigration paperwork filled out for Omar when she was a child. Her late father, Nur Omar Mohamed, handled the forms after the family arrived from Somalia as refugees in 1995. Officials are checking whether false statements were made about her age or other details. Omar has said she received automatic U.S. citizenship in 2000 at age 17 because she was still a minor when her father became a citizen. If records show she was already 18, that automatic path would not have applied. Subpoenas have gone to relatives, including a sister.

My second question is why would allegedly decent law abiding citizen would flee their home at night like a thief.
Ilhan Omar left her DC home at 4 AM on October 12, 30 minutes before the HSI agency began monitoring her house.
The raid occurred two hours later. Since then, no one has seen her again; two sources from the Dept of Homeland Security (DHS) said she was likely informed in advance and there could possibly be a chance that she may have had left the country.
Thoughts: Someone involved had warned Omar in advance that there would be a nighttime raid, so she had time to flee the house in the middle of the night.

Omar has not been charged. She has denied wrongdoing and called the raid political targeting by President Trump. GOP Rep. Jeff Van Drew has described a “mountain” of evidence. Tim Pool and others have highlighted the raid, the seized devices, and the fact that a judge approved the warrant as signs investigators believe they have something solid.
Barack Obama defended Omar on social media days later. He wrote that “the full weight of the federal government is being brought down on a law-abiding elected official because she has dared to criticize the president” and called the situation “appalling.” Conservatives responded by pointing to past uses of federal power under Obama, including the IRS targeting of Tea Party groups. Omar remains free and has not been charged.

Critics have alleged Elmi is her brother and that the marriage was meant to help him gain immigration benefits. The couple divorced in 2017. Omar has denied the claim. Some sources indicate the current raid focuses more on the childhood paperwork than the marriage.
The Minnesota connection runs through a separate, much larger scandal. During the COVID pandemic, the Feeding Our Future program was supposed to pay for meals for hungry children. Instead, dozens of people—mostly from Minnesota’s Somali community—submitted claims for millions of meals that were never served. They received federal payments and spent the money on mansions, luxury cars, and shopping. Prosecutors put the theft in that scheme at roughly $250 million. Broader welfare fraud estimates in the state have run much higher.

Omar sponsored the MEALS Act in 2020. The bill expanded the ability of restaurants and other sites to receive federal meal money and loosened some verification rules during the emergency. Critics say those changes made large-scale fraud easier. Omar held her 2018 election victory party at Safari Restaurant in Minneapolis. Co-owner Salim Ahmed Said was later convicted of stealing more than $12 million through phantom-meal claims. He bought a large house and spent heavily at Nordstrom. Omar appeared in a Somali-language video promoting Safari as a meal distribution site.
A former campaign worker for Omar, Guhaad Hashi Said, pleaded guilty to running a fake food site and taking about $3.2 million. Omar’s campaign also accepted donations from people later convicted in the fraud; the money was returned after the scandal became public. State lawmakers have asked for Omar’s communications with some of the defendants. She has said she had no knowledge of the schemes and supports feeding children.

Separate questions surround the finances of Omar’s husband, Tim Mynett. Congressional disclosures showed the reported value of his venture capital firm, Rose Lake Capital, and a winery jumping from near zero in 2023 to as much as $30 million in 2024. A later amended filing cut the couple’s reported assets to under $100,000 and blamed an accounting error. House Oversight Chairman James Comer is examining the sudden valuation swings and whether they connect to the Minnesota fraud networks. Omar’s office has said she is not a millionaire.
