Fifth-generation rancher Braden Jensen has been pointing people to numbers from a USDA safety review of Merck’s Sequivity vaccine for pigs. The figures he uses come from the official study summary, not from a separate field trial on one ranch. I looked into the claims made, and this checks out. A bit surprising at first.
The study tested 748 young piglets at three sites. Each animal got two intramuscular doses three weeks apart. Researchers watched the pigs for 21 days after each dose, or until any reaction cleared.
Of the 748 piglets, 525 showed no adverse events. That means roughly 223 animals, or nearly 30 percent, experienced some reaction. The summary lists about 24 deaths. Other reported problems included anorexia in roughly 7.4 percent of the animals and lameness in about 2.7 percent. Adding deaths together with cases of anorexia and failure to thrive accounts for around 11.5 percent of the group.
Jensen has described those results as a warning. He has spoken about the study in interviews and on social media. His concern is that RNA-based vaccines are already in commercial pork production and that similar tools could move into other livestock.
Sequivity is not the same product as the mRNA shots given to people during COVID. It uses an RNA particle platform built on a defective alphavirus. The virus cannot make new copies of itself. Merck developed the system to create custom vaccines against swine influenza, porcine circovirus, rotavirus, and other pig diseases. The USDA licensed the platform years ago. Farmers decide whether to use it. The label notes that moderate local swelling at the injection site can occur, especially after the second dose. There is a required waiting period before slaughter.

No comparable RNA or mRNA vaccine has been approved for cattle in the United States. Cattle industry groups have stated this repeatedly. Research continues on other species, but those products are not in commercial use.
Industry sources describe Sequivity as a useful tool against diseases that already kill pigs. Critics look at the percentage of animals that had adverse events in the safety study and ask whether that rate is acceptable in food animals. The study was designed to show safety under typical use conditions. It does not include a full side-by-side comparison with unvaccinated piglets for every listed reaction in the public summaries. As someone who has near zero love of Big Pharma in any way, how abut we keep them away from our food. This nonsense is not needed, ever.
RNA breaks down quickly. Cooking and normal digestion destroy it. Or so we are told. Federal rules require a withdrawal time so meat from vaccinated pigs does not enter the food supply with residual vaccine material. There is no evidence that eating properly handled pork from Sequivity-vaccinated animals delivers an active vaccine to people. Sorry but I have zero faith in anything any agency backed by Big Pharma says.
Jensen raises cattle. He has used the swine study numbers to argue that the public should see the official data before RNA technology expands further in livestock. The USDA summary is public. Readers can look at the counts themselves and weigh what the rates mean for pork production and for the people who buy the meat. Do you want Big Pharma to get this to be forced into our food. I say hells no.
