JUST IN: 𝕏 suspends more than 13,000 accounts linked to suspected foreign influence operations from Russia, China, & Iran ahead of the U.S. midterm elections.
— Polymarket (@Polymarket) October 15, 2026
X just took down more than 13,000 accounts linked to three suspected foreign influence operations from China, Russia, and Iran. The accounts were pushing content about U.S. politics in the run-up to the November 3 midterm elections. We here at Whatfinger cheer on most things that Elon does. This move can help Republicans in the elections on November 3rd.
X’s Global Government Affairs team announced the suspensions on October 14. The networks used fake profiles to post and amplify political material aimed at candidates and public figures across the political spectrum. X found them through proactive sweeps and investigations under its rules against spam and coordinated inauthentic behavior.
“Free speech is the bedrock of a functioning democracy, and we are proud that X is the global town square where these debates happen. Our job is to keep that conversation authentic, open, and safe,” the team said. They also reminded users of the Civic Integrity policy, which bars false claims about when, where, or how to vote, attempts to suppress turnout, voter intimidation, and calls for violence near polling places. People can flag posts so Community Notes can add context.
X says it suspended more than 13,000 accounts in three suspected influence operations linked to Iran, Russia and China that targeted US political conversation. X published no country split or evidence, and we found no independent confirmation yet. https://t.co/tPcOQksfwR https://t.co/lrFuCan7Df

This is not a one-off. In August, X reported finding roughly 200,000 suspected Chinese bot accounts, some of them weighing in on American debates over AI data centers and energy policy. Microsoft previously documented Chinese Communist Party-linked operators posing as U.S. voters and stirring divisive issues online. Separate reporting this week described Russian operators using AI-generated celebrity videos and bot networks to push false claims about Democratic candidates; X has already suspended about 80 percent of the accounts researchers flagged in that effort.
Elon Musk bought the old Twitter in 2022 after years of complaints that the platform censored conservative voices while letting bots and foreign operators run free. He rebranded it X, cut staff, opened the Twitter Files, and put Community Notes in place so users could correct posts without heavy-handed company labels. Fighting coordinated fake accounts fits the pattern he has described since the start: protect real speech by Americans, not the noise from regimes that treat the internet as another battlefield.
🔴 X suspends 13,000 accounts in Iran, Russia, China influence ops
X suspended more than 13,000 accounts Wednesday tied to three foreign influence networks ahead of the November 3 US midterm elections. The company said the accounts used fake identities to post and amplify political content targeting candidates and public figures across the political spectrum, identified through proactive sweeps against spam and coordinated inauthentic behaviour.

X has not released a country-by-country breakdown, named specific targets, or published the raw evidence linking the accounts to government agencies. That leaves room for skeptics. What it has done is publicly name China, Russia, and Iran and remove the accounts less than three weeks before voters decide every House seat and a third of the Senate.
Foreign governments have spent years trying to shape American arguments from the outside. The old platform often treated domestic conservatives as the bigger problem. Under Musk, X is treating the foreign networks as the problem and removing them so the remaining conversation is closer to what actual Americans are saying. That is the difference between a platform that pretends to police speech and one that tries to keep the town square real.

From the folks: MAR: Elon Musk’s X confirmed Tuesday that it had purged more than 𝟏𝟑,𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝐚𝐜𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐬 tied to three separate foreign influence networks — one linked to Iran, one to Russia, one to China — after the company’s Global Affairs team traced a coordinated push to shape American political discourse three weeks before the midterms. The networks weren’t picking a side. X says the inauthentic accounts were built to “𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘧𝘺 𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘜.𝘚. 𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘴”, targeting candidates and public figures “𝘢𝘤𝘳𝘰𝘴𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘰𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘮” — the kind of astroturfed noise engineered to look like real American debate while actually running out of Tehran, Moscow, and Beijing.
The company credited its own 𝐒𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐞𝐚𝐦 with catching the networks through proactive sweeps and investigations, not an outside tip-off or a watchdog report forcing its hand. This isn’t the platform’s first strike this year. X disclosed a 200,000-account Chinese bot farm in August, and told UK lawmakers back in March it had suspended roughly 800 million accounts over the prior twelve months, ranking Russia as the single most active state actor working the platform. MD Bay News: X SUSPENDS MORE THAN 13,000 ACCOUNTS LINKED TO IRAN, RUSSIA AND CHINA IN SUSPECTED ELECTION INFLUENCE OPERATIONS Elon Musk’s X announced Wednesday that it removed more than 13,000 accounts connected to three suspected foreign influence operations targeting American political discussions ahead of the November 3 midterm elections. THREE COUNTRIES: X identified suspected coordinated networks linked to Iran, Russia and China. POLITICAL TARGETS: The accounts amplified content about candidates and public figures across the political spectrum.
HOW THEY OPERATED: Networks allegedly used fake accounts to manipulate conversations and artificially amplify political messaging. DETECTION: X says its Global Government Affairs and Safety teams uncovered the activity through proactive investigations. WHAT REMAINS UNKNOWN: X has not disclosed country-by-country account totals, the people behind the operations or how many Americans encountered the content. ELECTION SECURITY: X says enforcement will continue through Election Day and beyond. Foreign influence doesn’t need to change a single ballot to distort public debate. Artificially amplifying political narratives can itself undermine trust in elections. SOURCES: X Global Government Affairs (Oct. 14, 2026); EFE; Iran International.
