ZeroHedge flagged the setup this week. Millions of people live inside a winter storm corridor that runs from southern Maine down the East Coast to Florida and reaches west into Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.
The reason is a fast-strengthening El Niño. El Niño is a natural pattern of warmer-than-normal water in the tropical Pacific Ocean. That warm water shifts the jet stream and the main storm track. NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center said on October 8 that a strong-to-very strong El Niño is likely through January-March 2027, with the chance staying above 83 percent. The same update put an 83 percent chance on a historic event in October-December that would beat every El Niño in the record back to 1950.
Meteorologist Ryan Hall has zeroed in on one stretch of that corridor. He is more confident now than a few weeks ago that someone from Oklahoma through Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, the Carolinas, and the Appalachians gets a big snowstorm or a big ice storm this winter. For New England and the Mid-Atlantic he called the rain-versus-snow question a coin flip.
Hall put three bets on record in early September. The southern half of the country stays more active than the northern half. Somewhere from Oklahoma through Tennessee and Kentucky to the Carolinas gets a snow or ice storm the area is not built to handle. Some of the big northern snow cities finish the winter short of their normal totals.
AccuWeather’s Paul Pastelok sees the same El Niño and calls it potentially the strongest on record, almost certain to top the 1982-83 and 1997-98 events. He expects rainfall, coastal flooding, and swollen rivers to matter more than pure snow in many places, especially where warmer air hangs on across the North. The forecast gives New York City 10-20 inches against a 29.8-inch average, Chicago 12-25 against 38.4, and Boston 15-30 against 49.2. He still notes that one storm can flip the script for East Coast cities later in the season.
Weather sites and X posts have piled on. Severe Weather Europe’s October update keeps the Super El Niño on a record track. The latest long-range data shows much of the United States trending colder and snowier in places, with a Polar Vortex signal for a more active second half of winter. California faces heavy rain, mountain snow, and higher flood and mudslide risk. The southern storm track stays busy.
Public posts on X talk about harsh winters, stocking supplies, snow dumps east of the Mississippi, and ice events the South does not usually see. Some users in the Rockies and Southwest expect heavier mountain snow than recent years. Others point to the usual El Niño split: milder and drier across the far north, wetter and stormier across the South and West.
The forecasts do not lock into one simple “brutal everywhere” picture. NOAA’s official U.S. Winter Outlook for December through February is scheduled for October 15. Pastelok and others keep reminding people that a strong El Niño moves the storm track. It does not guarantee feet of snow in every driveway. The moisture is there. The cold air has to arrive at the right time.
Households in the battleground corridor face the usual winter checklist with extra attention to ice and power outages. The West Coast watches rivers and burn scars. The northern tier may see lower heating bills, but the shovels stay handy. El Niño is already one of the strongest on the books this early in the season. The models say it can still get stronger. The first real test is still weeks away. We know the Democrats are hoping for a total disaster before November 3rd. High gas prices, war, weather, and all of the scams the Democrats pull are additive, and the Left is hoping it is enough to topple the Republicans all over America.
