A March 2024 confrontation ended with officers fatally shooting 19-year-old Win Rozario inside his Queens home. Rozario, who struggled with mental illness, lunged at officers with scissors after police twice used Tasers against him. His mother and brother desperately begged officers not to shoot before two cops opened fire, killing Rozario. Although the officers faced no criminal charges, one was allowed to retire before his NYPD disciplinary trial, sparking outrage from Rozario’s family. The controversy prompted Mayor Zohran Mamdani to order a review of NYPD use-of-force policies and announce additional funding for police oversight.
