Clashes broke out near Paris’s Place de la Bastille and across France on October 8 as tens of thousands of people took to the streets to protest worsening school conditions. Footage from the demonstrations showed police deploying water cannons and charging crowds while chemical irritants filled the air, as protesters retaliated by hurling chairs, shrubs, and other objects at officers. According to the Ministry of the Interior, more than 70,000 people participated in the nationwide demonstrations.
