Spain’s coalition government has unveiled a new housing decree aimed at curbing soaring costs and addressing a nationwide housing crisis. The package follows massive protests triggered by the controversial eviction of an 87-year-old woman in Madrid.
The proposed measures extend eviction protections for vulnerable citizens until 2030, regulate room and seasonal rentals, and offer tax incentives for landlords and first-time home buyers. However, youth and tenant activists have criticized the decree as insufficient, arguing it fails to tackle the root structural issue of housing treated as a market commodity. Parliament must vote to ratify the measures within 30 days, though the minority government will need support from smaller political parties to secure approval.
