Barcelona was under an emergency red weather alert as rain fell on the city at a rate of more than 3.54 inches per hour on Wednesday, September 16.
The State Meteorological Agency said the torrential rain would cause “extreme danger,” with authorities closing several roadways in the area due to the severe flash flooding.
Footage captured by social media users show streets inundated with several inches of floodwater, which can be seen seeping into the entrances of some buildings.
The Spanish Civil Protection unit labeled the weather as an “extreme risk situation” and advised citizens to identify elevated areas and head to them if necessary.
