On March 4, 2026, Pouria Darvishi, a crew member aboard Iran’s frigate IRIS Dena, survived after the warship was struck by a US submarine while returning from an international naval exercise from India, despite carrying no heavy weapons in accordance with the rules of the exercise, as per Iranian authorities. The attack killed 104 sailors, according to Iranian officials.
Speaking to TRT World, Darvishi recalls the moment the first torpedo struck, the desperate rescue efforts that followed, and the devastating scenes he witnessed before the Dena disappeared beneath the sea.
