Every single action, thought, and motive of our lives is currently flowing up a spiritual pipeline to be poured out directly at the feet of Jesus Christ.
Welcome back to our small group study! John Barnett here. I want you to imagine we are sitting right across the table from each other, maybe at Panera, Starbucks, or a local diner, with our Bibles open, our journals ready, and a fresh cup of coffee. I love these times. I remember doing these early morning studies with active-duty state troopers who would roar in to meet me at a highway exit, with busy executives, or with college sports coaches at Western Michigan University. I would lean across the table, just like I am doing with you right now, to share these life-altering truths.
Today, I am incredibly excited to introduce a class designed to help us stop wasting our precious days on earth and start preparing for the most important day of our existence. Drawn directly from our chapter study, let me walk you through three memorable, life-changing truths we are going to unpack together:
1. The Divine Pipeline: Justification and the Zapping of Sin

Summary of What’s Covered: We begin by looking at the incredible reality of our daily lives before God. I will sketch out a timeline on our virtual blackboard: my birth in 1956, my salvation in 1962, today, and my last day on earth. We will explore the staggering truth that on the cross 2,000 years ago, Jesus paid for every single sin from our birth to our translation to heaven. Because of justification, God judicially zaps and completely erases our sins from the equation so they never enter the pipeline of what we present to Him. Everything else—our thoughts, motives, and deeds—flows straight up to His presence.
2. The Cosmic Sorting Process: Treasures vs. Good-For-Nothing Wood
Scripture References: 1 Corinthians 3:13–15; 1 Corinthians 10:31; 2 Corinthians 5:9
Summary of What’s Covered: Next, we will look at how Jesus sorts the contents of our pipeline into two piles. The first is the "good" pile—moments lived according to His Word in the power of the Spirit that please Him. God keeps these forever as precious treasures, just like you would cherish and keep a handmade card from your child or a love letter from your spouse. The second pile goes straight into the incinerator because it is foulon—a Greek word in 2 Corinthians 5:10 that means "good for nothing". We will talk openly about how easily we waste our lives on empty things like Netflix, Disney Plus, Hulu, or aimless web surfing. While we can play sports or eat and drink to the glory of God, we must make sure we aren’t filling our carts with things that will simply burn.
3. The Funeral Test: Writing Your Legacy to Meet the Judge

Summary of What’s Covered: Finally, we will walk through a deeply personal, hands-on application to help us live with eternity in view. I am going to challenge you to take a piece of paper and write out exactly what you want said at your funeral—such as how you loved your family, prayed daily, and fulfilled your calling to please God. Once you write it down, we will ask God for the daily grace to live exactly that way. This is how we actively prepare for the greatest day of our lives: the day we stand before the Bema seat, the judgment seat of Christ, to give an account of what we did with our earthly bodies.
