The Apostle Paul’s life and ministry were perfectly anchored in real history, spanning three great missionary journeys and culminating in a hard, lonely decade of imprisonment.
Welcome back to our small group study! John Barnett here. I want you to imagine we are sitting right across the table from each other, maybe at Panera or Starbucks, with our Bibles open and our notebooks ready. Today, I am incredibly excited to introduce a class that takes us deep into the chronological backbone of the New Testament. I have drawn up a special outline for you to show you the exact context of Paul’s letters. If you want to understand how Paul’s personal life, his missionary travels, and his inspired epistles perfectly align with the timeline of scripture, you absolutely must join us for this lesson.
Here are three memorable, life-changing truths we will unpack together:
1. The Portrait of Paul’s Heart: An Outline of the Corinthian Ministry
Scripture References: 2 Corinthians 1–11.
Summary of What’s Covered: We kick off the class with an overview of what I consider the greatest chapter in the Bible. To understand it, we must see where it fits in Paul’s letter. In the first five chapters, Paul surveys his motivation, his ministry, and his ultimate message of the gospel. In chapters 6 through 9, we see his personal appeal to his converts in Corinth, dealing with spiritual matters and the practical necessity of giving to invest in the local church and support his ministry. Finally, in chapters 10 and 11, we watch Paul answer his critics, directly refuting their false accusations and laying out his true apostolic credentials.
2. Walking the Dusty Roman Roads: Mapping the Third Missionary Journey
Scripture References: Acts 18–21 (The historical background of Paul’s travels).
Summary of What’s Covered: Next, we put on our sandals and pull out our historical maps to trace Paul’s third missionary journey. We will follow him as he leaves his home base in Antioch, travels through Roman Asia, and ministers in Ephesus. We will discover that as he sailed over to Macedonia, somewhere between Thessalonica and Philippi, he penned the very letter we are studying today—2 Corinthians. We will track his footsteps down to Berea, Athens, and Corinth, and map his return voyage past Ephesus and Miletus all the way back to Jerusalem.
3. The Chronology of a Surrendered Life: From Damascus Road to the Roman Prison
Scripture References: Acts 9; Acts 11; Galatians; 1 & 2 Thessalonians; Romans; 1 & 2 Timothy; Titus.
Summary of What’s Covered: Finally, we zoom out to look at the grand timeline of Paul’s entire life. We will map his salvation in Acts 9, his training in Arabia, his seven years in his hometown of Tarsus, and his discipleship under Barnabas in Antioch. You will learn the exact order in which he wrote his letters: Galatians first, then 1 and 2 Thessalonians from Corinth. He wrote Romans during his third journey, wrote his four prison epistles during a suffering decade of captivity, and penned 1 Timothy and Titus after being released by Nero. We will close by looking at his second, final imprisonment from which he wrote 2 Timothy just before his execution.
If you want to build an unshakeable confidence in the historical timeline of your Bible and see how God perfectly guided Paul through a lifetime of fruitful ministry and hard suffering, you need to listen to "FTGC 40b Sacred Timeline Of 2 Corinthians 5.mp3". Grab your Bible, get your historical map ready, and let’s master the Scriptures together!
