John Barnett here, and welcome to our continuing study through the book of Acts! Grab your Bible and your devotional journal. I’m sitting here at my table—with my wonderful wife, Bonnie, helping me record in the studio—ready to take you into our newest lesson.
I have entitled this chapter "The Endless Cosmic War," because we are going to see exactly how the adversary, Satan, ramps up his deadly, invisible attacks against the early church, and how he wages spiritual warfare on individual saints today.
Here is a summary of the major, life-changing lessons we will cover in this class:
1. The Internal Sabotage: Defeating the Flesh (Acts 5:1-11; James 1)
When Satan failed to stop the unstoppable Gospel through external arrests in chapter 4, he changed tactics to internal sabotage. He shot a fiery dart into the hearts of two believers, Ananias and Sapphira, tempting them to lie to the Holy Spirit so they could look more spiritual to others. We learn a vital doctrine here: while temptation is demonic, yielding to that temptation is entirely human. God showed zero tolerance for this leaven in the church, proving how fiercely He protects His people from hidden sin.
2. The Boxer’s Buffet: Surviving Satan’s Tactics(2 Corinthians 12; 2 Corinthians 4:4; John 8:44) Satan is not a cultural myth; he is a galaxy-wide cosmic being waging a demonic war against your faith. In this class, we map out his specific tactics: he steals God’s Word from our minds, invades our thoughts, and constantly accuses us before God. Using the Roman world’s boxing metaphor, Paul explained in 2 Corinthians 12 that Satan "buffets" believers, hitting us with situational and physical pressures to hinder our ministry.
3. The Countermeasure: A Holy Passion for Fellowship
(Acts 5:12) How do we survive these demonic incursions? By embracing God’s ultimate countermeasure: homothumadon. This is the fifth time this beautiful Greek word is used in Acts, and it means a shared, holy passion for fellowship. I am issuing a strong challenge in this lesson to break out of our bad habits of isolation. It is time to stop sitting at home with popcorn watching church on a screen, and instead deliberately gather to rub shoulders with the body of Christ.
4. Flayed but Unbroken: Joy in the Crucible
(Acts 5:40) In this chapter, the persecution severely escalates. The apostles go from being merely intimidated in chapter 4, to being brutally "thrashed and flayed" with rods in chapter 5. They were given criminal scars on their backs for the rest of their lives. Yet, their incredible response was to go on their way rejoicing. This proves the profound truth that we can endure absolutely anything when God sustains us.
5. Raising the Flag: 160 Ways to Share the Gospel
(Acts 5; Revelation 16:16) Did you know the book of Acts records 160 different communications of the Gospel, utilizing 31 different Greek words?. You don’t have to be a formal preacher; you can simply reason, comfort, explain, and relate the truth. To apply this chapter, I challenge you to "raise the flag" this week by taking a physical, printed Bible to work or a coffee shop. When people ask what you are doing, you open the door to plant seeds using 12-cent Gospel tracts, building a collection of souls and scriptures that will last forever.
"Lord, I want you to protect me. Satan is very powerful… Stir my passion for fellowship, and lead me to those who will respond to your Word for Jesus’ sake. Amen."
