Welcome back to our small group study! John Barnett here. I want you to imagine we are sitting right across the table from each other at Panera or Starbucks, with our Bibles open and our notebooks ready. Today, I am incredibly excited to pitch to you a class that connects the majestic prophecies of the Old Testament straight to the ultimate destiny of every human soul.
If you want to understand the timeline of the end of the world, God’s unbreakable promises, and exactly what happens the moment a person dies, you absolutely must join us for this lesson. Here are the life-changing truths we are going to uncover together:
1. The Netzer, the Song, and the Storm
Scripture References: Isaiah 11, 12, and 13; Isaiah 53:2.
Summary of What’s Covered: We kick off the class by looking at the beautiful "Branch" prophecy. You will learn that Jesus is called a "Nazarene" because He is the netzer—a little tender shoot coming out of the stem of Jesse. From this promise of the Messiah in chapter 11, we flow right into a hymn of praise in chapter 12 about drawing water from the wells of salvation. But then, the storm hits. We plunge straight into chapter 13, which describes the terrifying "Day of the Lord"—a clear biblical code for the Tribulation and the Second Coming. We will see how Isaiah perfectly sews together near and far-distant events.
2. Sovereign Election: God’s Unbreakable Promise
Scripture References: Isaiah 14:1-2; Matthew 1.
Summary of What’s Covered: Next, we dive into the doctrine of sovereign election. Despite the coming doom of the nations, God declares He will have mercy on Israel and choose them. We will explore God’s forever promise to Abraham—that He will bring the Jewish people back to their land where no one will ever scatter them again. We will connect this to Matthew 1, showing that one fifth of the Bible is about the coming Kingdom Age, when Jesus will finally sit on the throne of His father David and rule over the earth in person.
3. The Sticky Bombs of Sin and the Waiting Room of the Dead
Scripture References: Isaiah 14:11-21; Isaiah 53; Luke 16; Revelation 20; Ezekiel.
Summary of What’s Covered: Finally, we look at the sobering reality of the afterlife. We will uncover a massive biblical truth: nobody is currently in Hell (the Lake of Fire). Instead, every lost human who has ever lived is consciously waiting in Sheol, Hades, or "the pit". It is a waiting room for the ultimate judgment at the Great White Throne. We will look at Ezekiel’s chilling description of sin as a "sticky bomb" or napalm that clings to us, sinking the unredeemed under the wrath of God. But here is the glorious Gospel application: we will look at Isaiah 53 to see how Jesus Christ stepped in, pulled the sticky bombs of our sin off of us, and put them on Himself, suffering the wrath we deserved!
