Footage released from United States Geological Survey captured a whirlwind, known in Hawaiian as a puahiohio, forming over Hawaii’s Kilauea volcano on June 1. Scientists said heat rising from recent lava flows likely helped create the rare atmospheric phenomenon. Kilauea remains one of the most volcanically active sites on the planet.
