The U.S. Naval Academy freshman class engaged in the annual ritual of scaling a granite obelisk coated with vegetable shortening on May 13. The tradition culminates in a freshman "Dixie cup" hat being replaced with an upperclassman’s "combination cap", marking their official passage from first-year plebes to fourth-class midshipmen; which was completed by midshipman Lincoln Hedberg – the son of New Jersey governor Mikie Sherrill (a 1994 Academy graduate). The 2029 graduation class completed the climb in 2 hours and 17 minutes.
