Now, two new documentaries are bringing fresh perspectives to this harrowing case, uncovering new interviews, unsettling details, and previously unseen footage.
“American Murder: Laci Peterson,” set to premiere on Netflix on August 14, promises a comprehensive exploration of the murder of the “lively and cherished” mother-to-be. In this three-part series, Amber Frey, Peterson’s former lover, breaks her silence, shedding light on their affair and her decision to contact the authorities.

Peterson himself, now 51, also emerges from a two-decade media silence in the new documentary “Face to Face with Scott Peterson,” airing on Peacock on August 20.
Laci disappeared from the couple’s Modesto, California, home on Christmas Eve in 2002. Scott reported her missing, claiming he had been fishing at Berkeley Marina while Laci had taken their dog for a walk. When he returned, the house was empty, and their dog was found outside with its leash still attached.
The heartbreaking case captivated the nation, dominating headlines alongside the Iraq War and the hunt for Saddam Hussein. Scott’s peculiar behavior, highlighted in “American Murder,” fueled public scrutiny. While Laci’s family made tearful public pleas, Scott appeared detached and avoided media attention.
Investigators uncovered unsettling details: Scott had washed his clothes, eaten pizza, and showered before notifying anyone about Laci’s disappearance—actions that raised suspicions.
In April 2003, four months after Laci’s disappearance, her body was found near Brooks Island, with Conner’s remains discovered a mile away a day earlier. Days later, Scott was arrested in San Diego, carrying $15,000 in cash, survival gear, and viagra, with his hair dyed blonde.
The 2004 trial became a media spectacle, culminating in Scott’s conviction on two counts of first-degree murder and a death sentence. In 2020, his death sentence was overturned, and he was resentenced to life in prison without parole. Despite his imprisonment, Scott continues to claim he was wrongly convicted.
In January 2024, the Los Angeles Innocence Project took on Peterson’s case, investigating his “claim of actual innocence.” Court documents suggest that Laci might have witnessed a Christmas Eve burglary across the street, leading to her abduction and murder by the burglars.

The Innocence Project has filed motions seeking additional evidence and new DNA testing on items related to the burglary and materials found near the crime scene. They are also requesting police reports and recordings from interviews with suspects and witnesses connected to the burglary. The filings accuse the Modesto Police Department of prematurely dismissing connections between the burglary and the murders and withholding key information.
Now, two back-to-back documentaries aim to shed new light on this decades-old mystery.
Netflix’s “American Murder: Laci Peterson” features new interviews with detectives, journalists, legal experts, Laci’s family, childhood friends, and jurors from Scott’s trial. A centerpiece of the documentary is Frey’s revealing interview, where she details her affair with Scott and how she was deceived by him.
Amid the search for Laci, Frey contacted the police after recognizing Scott from news reports, revealing their relationship. She recalls that Scott initially portrayed himself as a widower before confessing he was married but claimed his wife had passed away.
Adding depth, the series includes a rare interview with Sharon Rocha. Director Skye Borgman emphasizes the importance of bringing Laci’s memory back into focus, with Rocha discussing her daughter’s spirit, her love for dragonflies, and how both Laci and Conner remain with her family.
Scott Peterson will also provide his first media interview in over twenty years in Peacock’s upcoming documentary, described as “an exclusive series of intimate conversations.”
