In a heartrending announcement, the Dallas Police Department mourned the loss of Officer Darron Burks, a former high school teacher, who was tragically killed in the line of duty. The incident occurred near the Oak Cliff Community Center around 10 p.m. on Thursday, where Officer Burks and two other officers were ambushed, leading to a fatal shootout.

Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia expressed profound grief over the loss, describing Officer Burks as a brother and hero to the department. According to Garcia, the attack was a targeted act, solely based on the officers’ uniforms and their roles as protectors of the community. The assailant, 30-year-old Corey Cobb-Bey, engaged Officer Burks in a brief conversation, which he recorded on his cellphone, before fatally shooting him.

One of the most brutal ambush cop killings that you will ever hear took place Thursday night.

RIP Dallas Police Officer Darron Burks.

The violent encounter escalated quickly, with responding officers arriving to a chaotic scene. Senior Corporal Jamie Farmer and Karissa David were among the first on the scene. Farmer was shot in the leg, and David sustained a facial injury as they exchanged gunfire with Cobb-Bey, who was ultimately killed during a high-speed chase on Interstate 35.

Before joining the police force, Officer Burks had been a dedicated math teacher at Texas Can Academy’s Pleasant Grove Campus. His transition to law enforcement was driven by a desire to make a broader positive impact on his community. He is remembered fondly by colleagues and students alike for his commitment to service and mentorship, particularly to young people facing challenges.

“Our officers were targeted for nothing more than the uniform they wear. and for the brave and honorable job that they do.”
