The recent knife attack at a festival in Solingen, Germany, has drawn significant attention, especially after the Islamic State (ISIS) claimed responsibility for the incident. The attack, which occurred during the “Festival of Diversity” celebrating Solingen’s 650th anniversary, resulted in three deaths and eight injuries. ISIS stated that the assault was carried out to “avenge Muslims in Palestine and everywhere” and described the attacker as a “soldier of the Islamic State” WUSF  and Just The News

German police have arrested a man suspected of killing three people and injuring eight others in a knife attack on Friday in the western city of Solingen. The arrest was confirmed by Herbert Reul, the interior minister of North Rhine-Westphalia state, who announced on Saturday night that the suspect had been apprehended.

“The man we’ve really been looking for the whole day has just been taken into custody,” Reul told ARD public TV, although he did not provide further details. According to German news outlets Bild and Spiegel, the suspect, dressed in dirty, blood-stained clothing, turned himself in to authorities.

The attack, described by Chancellor Olaf Scholz as a “horrific act,” occurred during a festival in Solingen, where two men, aged 56 and 67, and a 56-year-old woman were fatally stabbed. Reul stated that evidence had been found, indicating that the man taken into custody was their primary suspect. A spokesperson for the state interior ministry also confirmed that the suspect had surrendered to the police.

This arrest marks the third apprehension related to the stabbing incident that has left Germany in shock. Earlier in the day, police detained a man at a nearby refugee center, located roughly 300 meters (984 feet) from Fronhof, Solingen’s central market square where the attack took place. Special task force (SEK) officers stormed the center to make the arrest.

In addition to these arrests, a 15-year-old boy was detained earlier on Saturday. Authorities stated that while he was not the main suspect, he was believed to have had prior knowledge of the attack.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the stabbing attack on Saturday, but did not provide any concrete evidence linking them to the perpetrator, nor was the nature of their connection to the attacker clarified. Reports indicate that the attacker randomly targeted individuals during a festival celebrating the 650th anniversary of Solingen’s founding.

Following the attack, police described the scene in Fronhof as “very hectic,” which initially made locating the attacker challenging. They confirmed that the assailant specifically aimed for people’s throats and necks during the assault. Solingen, a city known for its steel industry and home to around 160,000 residents, lies about 25 kilometers (15 miles) east of Düsseldorf.

In response to the incident, the city authorities evacuated the Fronhof area around 10:00 p.m. local time on Friday and canceled the planned three-day anniversary celebrations, which were expected to draw approximately 75,000 attendees.

Solingen Mayor Tim Kurzbach expressed profound sorrow and shock over the attack, stating, “All of us in Solingen are in shock, horror, and great sadness. It breaks my heart that an attack has happened in our city. I have tears in my eyes when I think of those we’ve lost. I pray for all those still fighting for their lives. Also, my greatest sympathy for all those who had to experience this; these images must have been horrific.”

In a show of solidarity, players from Germany’s top Bundesliga soccer league wore black armbands during their matches on Saturday to honor the victims of the attack.
