Elon Musk did not hold back his criticism, labeling the ban an attack on free speech. “X is the most used news source in Brazil. It is what the people want. Now, the tyrant de Voldemort is crushing the people’s right to free speech,” Musk wrote while referring to Alexandre de Moraes, the Brazilian Supreme Court justice behind the decision. Musk also accused the Brazilian government of stifling democratic freedoms while pretending to uphold them.
Moraes ordered the immediate suspension of X across Brazil until the company complies with court orders, including the payment of significant fines totaling 18.5 million reais (around $3.28 million) and the appointment of a local legal representative. To prevent users from bypassing the ban through VPNs, Moraes threatened fines of up to 50,000 reais per day (about $9,000) for individuals or companies attempting to maintain access to the platform.
Supporters of Musk swiftly condemned the ban, framing it as a blatant attempt to suppress free speech. Texas Senator Ted Cruz criticized the move, suggesting it was part of a broader effort to silence dissent. “Brazil is banning X for one reason: to suppress free speech and thought,” Cruz posted, drawing connections between Brazil’s actions and what he perceives as similar tendencies in the Biden administration.

Outkick host Clay Travis also weighed in, calling for the NFL to cancel its upcoming game in Brazil to protest the ban on X. He suggested that moving the game back to the U.S. would make a strong statement in support of free speech. Cruz echoed this sentiment, urging the NFL to act in defense of constitutional rights.
Musk also took aim at the United States, warning that similar censorship could occur if political figures like Kamala Harris and Tim Walz come to power. “The attacks this year on free speech are unprecedented in the 21st century. It will happen in America too if Kamala/Walz gain power,” Musk wrote, urging vigilance against what he sees as creeping authoritarianism.
Earlier this year, de Moraes had ordered X to remove certain accounts, accusing the platform of enabling “digital militias” to spread misinformation and hate speech. Musk responded by condemning the demands, claiming they would force X to break multiple national and international laws, leaving the company no choice but to shut down its Brazilian operations.

Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva supported de Moraes’ actions, insisting that all foreign investors must respect Brazilian laws. “Any citizen, from anywhere in the world, who has investments in Brazil, is subject to the Brazilian Constitution and Brazilian laws,” Lula said as taking stance against Musk’s perceived defiance.
