Perdue Foods Recalls Over 167,000 Pounds of Chicken Products Due to Metal Contamination Concerns

Perdue Foods has issued a recall of more than 167,000 pounds of frozen chicken products due to concerns about possible contamination with metal. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the recall, citing that the affected items may contain foreign material, specifically metal wire.

The recall applies to several varieties of frozen, ready-to-eat chicken breast tenders and nuggets, including products sold under the Butcherbox brand. These items were manufactured on March 23, 2024, and distributed to retail locations nationwide, as well as sold directly to consumers online.

The issue came to light after Perdue received multiple complaints from customers who reported finding metal wire embedded in the chicken products. In response, Perdue notified the FSIS and initiated the recall as a precautionary measure. The company has not received any confirmed reports of injuries or illnesses related to the consumption of these products.

The FSIS is urging consumers to check their freezers for the recalled products and to either throw them away or return them to the place of purchase. The affected packages can be identified by the establishment number “P-33944,” which is printed on the back of each product.

Jeff Shaw, Senior Vice President of Perdue Foods, explained on the company’s website that the contamination likely occurred due to a very thin strand of metal wire being inadvertently introduced into the manufacturing process. Shaw emphasized that the recall was initiated out of an abundance of caution to ensure consumer safety.
