Rare drone video captured an unusual lava flow at Italy’s Mount Etna, showing molten rock appearing to pour into a deep summit opening near the Northeast Crater instead of flowing down the volcano’s slopes. Local observers said the lava may have entered the Northeast Crater’s conduit from the neighboring Voragine crater.

Mount Etna put on a show, glowing red flashes lighting up the sky as lava kept pouring out. Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology says it erupted at nearly 9,800 feet.
