US Department of Homeland Security officers took a Columbia University student into custody, sparking outrage as local officials claimed the federal agents posed as police officers — complete with fake badges — to gain entry to campus housing.
Several student groups quickly organized an emergency rally to protest Elmina Aghayeva’s detention. The demonstration, held outside the gates of Columbia University, drew approximately 100 participants, according to the Columbia Spectator.
