Some of the last recorded words of Peter before he was martyred are recorded in his last epistle. “I live in the tent of this body, because I know that I will soon put it aside.” Life is camping. Heaven is home. The older we get, the more God is loosening our tent pegs, getting us ready to, as Peter said, lay aside our tent and move into the heavenly home Jesus is preparing for us.
Peter lived the way Abraham did, as an alien and stranger in a land that was not his home. Abraham never built anything in this world but altars to God. He never bought anything but a place to bury his wife. He looked ahead. Paul says, “our citizenship is in heaven,” and the old hymn echoes that thought: “this life is not my home, I’m just passing through.” Life is camping. Heaven is home.
