Late Sunday night, a volley of alleged Israeli airstrikes hammered military positions deep in central Syria, leaving at least 14 dead and dozens more wounded—43, to be exact, with six clinging to life, according to Syrian state media. The strikes sparked fires and wrecked parts of the Hama province, where flames raged well into the early hours of Monday, firefighting teams scrambling to contain the chaos.

SANA, Syria’s state-run news agency, said Syrian air defenses “confronted an aggression targeting multiple points.” But the effort fell short. The missiles hit hard, reportedly damaging military sites and a highway in the region. Some local outlets pointed to a key target—a scientific research center in Masyaf, a site long rumored to be connected to the production of precision missiles and chemical weapons, under both the Syrian regime and Iranian oversight.
This is no ordinary site, though. Masyaf has become something of a battlefield in the shadows, repeatedly hit in recent years, with Israel being the suspected hand behind many of the strikes. It’s a place tied to Iran’s regional influence—home to forces that Western powers have accused of building weapons, and a hub for pro-Iranian militias.
As the dust settled, bodies were rushed to Masyaf National Hospital—14 dead, 43 wounded, some hovering between life and death. The identities of those lost or injured remain unclear, with the hospital’s director offering no details.

Israel, as usual, remained silent, offering no official comment, just as it has done in countless prior operations. For over a decade now, since Syria plunged into civil war in 2011, Israeli forces have launched strikes inside Syrian territory, with a sharp eye on stopping the transfer of advanced weaponry to Hezbollah, the Iran-backed Lebanese militia. The strikes are also aimed at keeping Iranian fighters from establishing a strategic hold close to Israel’s borders.
But the stakes have climbed since October 7. After the horrific attack by Hamas, which saw more than 1,200 Israelis murdered and 251 taken hostage, Israel’s military response has shifted into overdrive. Its airstrikes against Iranian-backed groups in Syria have intensified, hitting not just these militias but also Syrian military positions and air defenses. The conflict has rippled far beyond the initial spark that ignited the war in Gaza.

Meanwhile, Hezbollah has been ramping up its involvement, lobbing near-daily fire into Israel from Lebanon’s border, in what seems like a show of solidarity with Hamas. These exchanges between Hezbollah and Israel—missiles flying back and forth—have become an almost constant drumbeat in the ongoing tension across the region.
The strikes in Syria are part of a much larger and more tangled conflict—a web of alliances, grudges, and shadow wars stretching across the Middle East. The loss of life, the devastation, and the strategic implications are all part of a story that seems far from over. And as Israeli jets continue to strike, it’s hard to tell where the next flashpoint will come from.
