Islamic State militants escaped from a prison in eastern Syria during a chaotic transfer of control between Kurdish-led forces and the Syrian government, according to US officials. The breakout occurred as guards abandoned the facility amid a fragile ceasefire, allowing local residents to free detainees, though US officials say most were later recaptured as Syrian forces imposed a curfew and launched security operations.
