Mount Kīlauea erupted Sunday, sending lava fountains into the air and producing an ash plume that rose about 35,000 feet above sea level, according to officials. The U.S. Geological Survey said the blast marked the volcano’s 42nd episode of lava fountaining as part of ongoing intermittent activity that began in December 2024.
