Ten years after the crippling cyberattack on Sony Pictures, Disney is now facing a reported hack of its internal Slack workplace messages by a group called Nullbulge. Disney announced on Monday that it is investigating the breach, which was first reported by the Wall Street Journal. The hack is said to involve data from thousands of Slack channels within the media and entertainment giant.

A Disney spokesperson confirmed, “Disney is investigating this matter.” According to the Nullbulge website, under the header ‘Disney Internal Slack,’ the group claims to have hacked “almost 10,000 channels, every message and file possible.” The site boasts, “Unreleased projects, raw images and code, some logins, links to internal api/web pages, and more! Have fun sifting through it, there is a lot there.”

The Wall Street Journal reported that it couldn’t immediately verify the extent of the documents involved or how they were obtained. The material viewed by the publication dates back to 2019 and includes discussions about maintaining Disney’s corporate website, evaluations of job candidates, leadership programs at ESPN, and employee photos. Nullbulge has posted screenshots of the documents online.

The group told the Wall Street Journal that they targeted Disney due to its handling of artist contracts, its approach to AI, and what they described as a blatant disregard for consumers. The Nullbulge site claimed, “Consider releasing practically every bit of personal information you have, including logins to credit cards to SSN, as a warning to people in the future.”

Nullbulge claimed to have accessed the information by compromising the computer of a Disney manager of software development.

This incident brings to mind the severe hack at Sony Pictures in 2014 by agents linked to North Korea, which created chaos by damaging internal systems, paralyzing phones, email service, and computers, and publicly releasing thousands of email messages, some of which were embarrassing and involved then-co-chair Amy Pascal, who stepped down several months later.
