A Liberal Democrat MP has labeled the Conservative Party’s proposal to mandate a 12-month national service period as a “desperate campaign announcement.” The plan requires 18-year-olds to either apply for one of 30,000 full-time military roles or commit to volunteering one weekend a month for community service. Helen Morgan, the Liberal Democrat MP from North Shropshire, criticized the initiative during a political discussion, likening it to a nonsensical idea, much like a comedic suggestion of “monkey tennis.”
The voters the Tories need back the National Service plan. But ‘time for a change’, the dominant mood in the country, matters a lot more to what happens on July 4th.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak defended the proposal, suggesting that it would cultivate a “national spirit” akin to that experienced during the pandemic. However, Morgan countered that in areas like North Shropshire, the lack of young workers for existing skilled jobs is a critical issue. She argued that redirecting young adults to national service could further harm the local economy and emphasized the need for training in apprenticeships that directly address job shortages.
Preet Gill, a Labour MP from Birmingham Edgbaston, echoed the sentiment of focusing on providing young people with hope and opportunities through jobs and training rather than compulsory service. Ellie Chowns, a leader from the Herefordshire Greens, dismissed the plan as merely an “election gimmick,” pointing out that it fails to offer genuine hope or opportunity to young people.
On the doorstep in Todmorden today people saw through the Tory’s bizarre national service plan. An uncosted gimmick that solves none of the problems young people face. pic.twitter.com/7IH5a5HqiT

On the defense, Mike Wood, a Conservative MP from Dudley South, insisted that the national service plan would not hinder young people from pursuing higher education or careers. He clarified that those opting for the community service route would only need to dedicate one weekend a month, gaining valuable skills in the process. Additionally, he noted that there are opportunities for full-time positions in the armed forces or cybersecurity fields for those interested.
🚨 Our Armed Forces & Youth Services are in a terrible mess.
⚠️ The Conservative gimmick of National Service for 18 year olds will not solve this.
We need a plan to invest in young people and ensure the military is properly supported.

Wood also mentioned that the Royal Commission would review the specifics of the implementation to ensure the program is effective and politically neutral. When asked about consequences for those who choose not to participate, he suggested that the only penalty would be missing out on potentially great opportunities, rather than facing any direct punishment.
