At the British Museum, we can see actual objects that verify the historical accuracy of God’s Word. From the Book of Daniel, we find numerous details that have been verified by history and archaeology. Here is just another.
This is a clay brick that bears an inscription celebrating the construction of a new palace for Nebuchadnezzar and his family in Babylon. It is written in the Babylonian dialect of Akkadian in cuneiform script. This brick, along with numerous similarly inscribed copies, would have been used to construct the walls of the new palace.
The British Museum has several fired clay bricks from the reign of Nebuchadnezzar II, including those inscribed with his name and titles. These bricks are valuable artifacts that provide insights into ancient Mesopotamian construction and inscription techniques.
Other faith-building exhibits fill this treasure house of history. The British Museum holds significant artifacts and documents that provide evidence related to biblical history and the time periods mentioned in the Bible. These items offer insights into the world of the ancient Near East and the cultures and events described in scripture.
Here’s a breakdown of the types of evidence the museum exhibits:
Inscribed Objects and Scripts:
The museum’s collection includes numerous inscribed tablets, reliefs, and other artifacts that shed light on biblical events and characters.
Babylonian Clay Tablet:
A Babylonian clay tablet records Nebuchadnezzar’s siege of Jerusalem in 597 BC, as described in the book of Jeremiah.
Lachish Reliefs:
These wall carvings from Sennacherib’s palace in Nineveh depict the Assyrians conquering Lachish, a city in Judah, which aligns with biblical accounts.
Sennacherib’s Prism:
This artifact confirms the existence of biblical King Sennacherib and provides evidence of Judah paying tribute to the Assyrian king.
Cyrus Cylinder:
This cylindrical clay tablet describes Cyrus the Great’s decree, which allowed the exiled Israelites to return to Judah and rebuild their temple, a decree consistent with biblical accounts.
Other Artifacts:
The museum also exhibits artifacts like the Epic of Gilgamesh, the El-Amarna Letters, the Obelisk of Shalmaneser III, and the Taylor Prism, which provide valuable historical and cultural context for understanding biblical history.
Pictorial Reliefs:
The museum’s collection includes pictorial reliefs that depict scenes from the Bible, offering visual confirmation of events described in the text.
The evidence found at the British Museum supports the historical accuracy of the Bible and provides valuable insights into the cultures and events described within its pages.
