Seven films into the Alien series, including the Alien vs. Predator spin-offs, audiences are familiar with the iconic Xenomorphs: the Facehuggers, Chestbursters, and the sleek, H.R. Giger-designed adult aliens. But the latest installment, Alien: Romulus, expands the franchise’s mythology with a fresh yet nostalgic twist.

Don’t miss Alien: Romulus on the big screens at Genesis Cinemas this weekend.

In the film’s climactic scenes, Rain (Cailee Spaeny) and her android brother Andy (David Jonsson) battle a relentless swarm of Xenomorphs. Meanwhile, Kay (Isabela Merced), the final human survivor, makes a desperate play for survival by injecting herself with a black liquid derived from the goo in Prometheus. This leads to a grotesque and rapid pregnancy, culminating in the birth of a towering hybrid creature, part Xenomorph, part Engineer.

This new hybrid reflects the series’ history of blending horror with science fiction. It echoes the alien-human hybrid from Alien: Resurrection, which featured a similar monstrous fusion. Romulus cleverly draws from the past while adding its own spin, reflecting a broader pattern in the series of confrontations between the Final Girl and the ultimate antagonist, culminating in dramatic showdowns often resolved by expelling the creature into space.

Director Fede Álvarez balances homage with innovation. The film incorporates elements from the classic Alien movies, such as the hybrid’s design, while also offering new interpretations. The inclusion of a synthetic android resembling the franchise’s previous models adds a layer of complexity, blending characteristics from Ash and David to create a new antagonist.

Romulus not only revisits old concepts but also bridges thematic elements from Prometheus and Resurrection, focusing on themes like scientific hubris and corporate greed. The film’s ending, with Rain in cryosleep and a familiar formula, demonstrates its respect for the franchise’s traditions while making a mark with new, unsettling horror elements.

While some might view the film’s reliance on past references as a weakness, its creative approach and thrilling sequences offer a satisfying experience for fans. The new hybrid and the film’s homage to previous entries ensure that Romulus remains an engaging and memorable addition to the Alien saga.

“Alien: Romulus” is the latest entry in the Alien franchise, directed by Fede Álvarez and released on August 16, 2024. The film is set between the events of the original Alien (1979) and Aliens (1986) and returns to the franchise’s horror roots, focusing on a group of young space colonizers who encounter the deadly Xenomorphs on a derelict space station.

The movie stars Cailee Spaeny as Rain Carradine, who, along with her crew, faces terrifying challenges as they confront the iconic creatures. The cast also includes David Jonsson, Archie Renaux, Isabela Merced, and Spike Fearn. Critics have praised the film for its “striking visuals and claustrophobic terror,” and some have even called it “arguably the best installment since Aliens.”

Fede Álvarez, known for his work on horror films like Evil Dead (2013), aimed to bring the series back to its suspenseful and terrifying origins. He mentioned that the goal was to create a film that would make audiences scream in theaters, emphasizing the isolation and fear that the original Alien films evoked (Columns) (Wikipedia) (CINEMABLEND).

    Key Points:

    • Alien: Romulus introduces a new hybrid creature, combining elements of Xenomorphs and Engineers, as part of its homage to the franchise’s history.
    • The film features a familiar ending pattern: a final confrontation with the ultimate antagonist, resolved by expelling the creature into space.
    • Director Fede Álvarez blends elements from previous Alien films, including android models and hybrid designs, with fresh interpretations.
    • Romulus bridges themes from Prometheus and Resurrection, exploring scientific overreach and corporate malfeasance.
    • Despite criticisms of its nostalgic approach, Romulus delivers a compelling and entertaining experience with inventive horror sequences.
