British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced a crackdown by his government in the wake of nationwide rioting by far-right groups. As part of a series of measures, the criminal justice system will be strengthened to ensure swift prosecutions, Starmer said Monday after an emergency cabinet meeting in London.
The violence stems from a knife attack in the coastal town of Southport, near Liverpool, that killed three children and injured ten others last Monday. The suspect forced his way into a building where a holiday dance class for children was taking place to the music of US star Taylor Swift.
The attack shook the United Kingdom. False information quickly circulated on the Internet claiming that the attacker was a Muslim asylum seeker. But police said the suspect was a 17-year-old born in Wales. According to British media, the young man’s parents are from Rwanda.
